[Bike Lust] Watson Cycles Custom 27.5 (650B) Steel Ruination Mountain Bike

Andrew Watson of Watson Cycles posted some great looking shots of his latest creation on Facebook recently. I really like the look of this bike. It’s set up well to tackle a variety of terrain. The kicker being that the bike is coupled so you can travel with it very easily.

I sent Andrew a message to see if I could get some more details about the build and the bike’s geo.

This bike is for one of my absolute favorite customers named Mike who is all about keeping everything as American as possible (note the Gates, White bros, Chris King, Thomson, Phil wood BB, S&S couplers, True Temper tubing, etc).  On his last bike we made him a 650b commuter rig that was belt drive and had the Alfine 11 internal hub.  He quickly fell in love with the belt drive/wheel size and being a single speeder at heart he dreamed this rig up.  He wanted a nice short stem on there to remind him of the old days riding a BMX rig and I was happy to make it happen.

The geometry on the frame is below:

  • Headtube angle – 69.5°
  • Seattube angle – 73°
  • Chainstay length – 430mm (+-10mm w/ sliders) or 16.93″
  • Bottom bracket height – 310mm or 12.2″
  • Headtube length – 130mm or 5.1″
  • Horizontal top tube length – 600mm or 23.62″
