Matter Cycles – Boulder, Colorado

Collin Schaafsma from Matter Cycles sent me an email letting me know about his bike company out of Boulder, Colorado. He says “I’m a relatively new builder based out of Boulder, CO working with steel primarily. All my bikes are made to order. I’m a one man shop making bikes I would like to ride myself. I mostly focus on all things dirt and I have three bikes I think you might really like.”

Below I’ve posted his three mountain oriented bike models. They all look really good and have nice features. If you’re in the market for a Colorado made bike, check out Matter Cycles.

SlayRide

Matter Cycles SlayRide
Matter Cycles SlayRide

Steel, burly, slack, long travel hardcore hardtail. It’s a mountain bike made to Slay and it’s a ton of fun!. A SlayRide is built around slacker angles, super short chain stays, front travel in the 150mm to 160mm range on 27.5 wheels and a healthy front center. If you want to shred on a hardtail this is the one.

Benefat

Matter Cycles Benefat
Matter Cycles Benefat

The Benefat was created out of the want for a fat bike that handled like a agile trail bike. Big tires are fun, a lot of fun, but typical fat bikes feel a bit sluggish and are not exactly playful and snappy. They’re hard to hop, flick, and manual. Fat bikes should be fun to ride year-round on the same trails you blast with your non-fatty whether it’s dry and dusty or full of snow. The geometry is derived from the SlayRide with the head tube angle dialed in for a 100mm travel Bluto fork and a sensible amount of bottom bracket drop for the big tires. The rear end of the bike is short, very short, and this really helps give the Benefat that playful feeling. Equipped with a 197mm x 12 thru axle to allow for more clearance and an ideal chain line even with the biggest tires and rims you can buy! You can also run 29 x 3in tires on 50mm rims for a little less wheel girth when speed is more important.  To pull all this off the frame features a custom yoke, curved seat tube and down tube. It also comes standard with internal routing for a dropper post, after all this is a big wheel bike made for getting rad. It’s silly fun.

GhostCat

Matter Cycles GhostCat
Matter Cycles GhostCat

The GhostCat is a single speed, belt drive ready fully rigid beast. It’s fast and very illusive! The geometry is based around a 29in front tire and a 27.5 rear tire. Yes you read that correctly. You won’t believe the stuff you can go through and how much fun you’ll have doing it. The back end is quick and short with just enough slack in the front to make you feel invincible. The big tire in the front will eat and grip everything while the smaller rear end gives the bike an awesome snap and playful feeling. It’s so much fun!! You can also run it with a 29+ front tire (as pictured) or a 100mm travel suspension fork, and if you feel like quitting some day I’ll add the cable stops for gears.
